“What’s that on the road, twelve o’clock low?” Red asked Hull.

“More burned up trucks. Wait, those are mechs.”

“Bogeys six o’clock level!”

Red’s eyes flicked to his tactical display at Johnson’s warning. Two contacts had appeared on the screen, and when he looked back up, he saw flashes of blue that looked like weapons fire.

“Break high right!” Red ordered Hull in Blackjack 293. He threw Fender 454 into a sharp left turn and flew as close to the towering mountains as he dared. His pursuer hesitated for a second, and Red was able to bring his hovercopter around far enough to get the craft into his weapons envelope. Fender 454 shuddered as Johnson unleased a full spread of rockets and missiles from the underwing pods. Red shoved the controls to the right, but the contact had already maneuvered above and behind them.

Red twisted and turned as hard as he could to regain a firing position, but Fender 454 was slow and clumsy compared to the unknown. The cockpit lit up in brilliant blue light, and warning alarms blared in Red’s ears as the dials on the instrument panel spun wildly, and the digital readouts showed errors. He pulled back on the controls as hard as he could, but the rocky mountain slope filled his windscreen.

“Red!” Johnson shouted just before the hovercopter slammed belly-first into the mountain.

The force of the impact jammed Red up against his five-point restraint harness and snapped his head forward and back. He felt the craft break in two and begin tumbling down the mountain, and a wave of orange heat flooded the cockpit.

“Fuckin’ fire,” Red said through gritted teeth.

The front half of the hovercopter slammed into some trees, and Red fought to stay conscious as the tumbling became a screeching slide. Finally, the wreckage came to rest against a large rock formation. He struggled to punch the release button on his harness, but his vision narrowed to a bright dot, and a wave of darkness overtook him. Just before he passed out, Red had the sudden thought that his mother would be disappointed that he cursed with his last breath.
